3 Random Things

Sneaky calories

We are all aware that counting calories will help with weight loss.  Most people over estimate their calorie intake. For example, condiments and sauses are easy to overlook. Did you know that one tablespoon of ketchup is 20-30 calories? Depending on the brand.

Cooking sprays and oils add more calories than you might think. Just one tablespoon of oil is 120 calories. That is about the size of the top of your thumb!

Avid dieters however are pretty good at knowing how many calories they are taking in. But even the best dieter can forget about the little calories.

Here are a few everyday things that contain sneaky calories.

1. Sometimes if I want a snack, but don't really want to eat, I'll reach for a piece of gum. Because R is diabetic,  we always get the sugar free gum. I usually think of it as a "free" snack and don't track it. But upon closer inspection I found that each tiny piece has 2 calories.

2. Brushing your teeth adds calories. Yep, that's right! Depending on the brand and how much you use you could be adding as many as 5 calories a day. I use Crest and I couldn't find that it has any calories, but Coalgate has 1 calorie per "smear".

3. Check your vitamins. I recently changed to the Alive! Women's gummy vitamins and was surprised to find that it has 25 calories per daily serving.

Are you letting sneaky calories add up? If you are tracking calories to lose weight, be sure to check everything that you put in your mouth.
